2000 Domaine Vincent Girardin Santanay "Clos de la Confrerie" Rouge (Monopole): Expressive, powerful nose right off the bat with spicy notes of cinnamon, cherries, cedar boxes and and VA. The palate, sadly, was not as impressive due to too much oak and sour acidity. It is possible that oak only seemed detrimental as the body was about as light as it gets. Still, an OK QPR because of the nose, and the palate showed a little better the second day. ($23)

2000 Quinta do Sairrao Reserva (Douro): The nose took a long time to come around, and with not much effectiveness in the end. The palate had potential with the fruit, but there was no acidity, structure, tannin, length, subtlety or reason - not unlike an episode of Everybody loves Raymond (sic). It is refreshing to know that Portugal can produce some terrible QPRs ($13.99)
