TN: 2004 Keuka Spring Seyval Blanc (Finger Lakes) | Dan Smothergill Email | 06-Sep-2005 00:24
Li ght limey color. Nose hints of grassiness. Nice full mouth feel, unlike the thinness of so many Seyval Blancs. Fresh apples and a moderately long aftertaste. Restored my wavering faith in Seyval Blanc as a stand alone wine. Definitely buy again at $7.

Seyval texture | Paul B., Ontario, Canada Email | 06-Sep-2005 05:18
Thanks for the note, Dan - it's been a while since I've sat down to study a varietal Seyval. Unfortunately, they are getting few and far between as VQA items grown in Ontario.

My feeling regarding the thinness is that it is likely due to growers taking a bit more liberty with yields than is probably optimal. I've had Seyval from Vineland Estates (when they used to make a varietal VQA example) that had very respectable texture. Also, Stoney Ridge Cellars made an oaked Seyval in '98 that was a completely unique wine - and very hybridy too, unlike most Seyvals that tend to be quite neutral.

Neutral and Blending | Dan Smothergill Email | 06-Sep-2005 12:59
"Neutral" is a good description of what I don't care for in many Seyval Blancs. Surprisingly, some very neutral Seyval Blancs enhance the taste of other wines when used as minority partner in a blend. A friend blends it with Cayuga with the result of a much crisper and more fruity wine.
