When new, the low-end Korean import cars sure look like an attractive purchase compared to some of the bigger-name Japanese models; they appear to offer "more for less" (e.g. Toyota, Honda and Nissan have deleted folding external mirrors in their cars - much to my chagrin! - though Hyundais and Kias have retained them), but I think that what you say about durability of components is true. I always think of the ultimate quality of mechanical components in those cars and the fact that they'll likely wear out much sooner, even with normal daily use. There must be a reason why a used Corolla holds its value so much better than a used Elantra.
