Quite possible, Paul. I'd thought the same thing myself--we used to catch the beetles in jars with soapy water in 'em, but these looked a little more squarish-ended. Probably normal variation. The many stripes on the abdomen also had me puzzled. Perhaps the same or a related species. Japanese beetles are a big problem here in Ohio.
