John, I have a feeling that it could well be the destructive Japanese beetle. I have had them doing exactly the same thing to the Niagara vine in my backyard. So far, I have not used any spray on my vine, but next year I may pick up some Sevin, which is supposed to work well against these vermin. A few leaves on my vine were sliced to pieces by these nasty bugs. Two years ago, I lost my Concord fruit due to burrowing Asian ladybugs - they bore into the ripening berries as they underwent veraison and gained sugar.
