My schizophrenic wine life took a turn to Southern Italy with the 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico del Vulture "Efesto" DOC Vigne di Mezzo. This wine seemed the polar opposite of the Vissoux Beaujolais we drank last night. It was inky opaque purple in color, with very ripe smells of plums, raisins, and coffee. A bit of VA, but not in the paint thinner realm. Chocolate, jammy black fruits, and a little black pepper follow. There is quite a bit of firm tannins and decent acidity to the structure. It seems like an international style Aglianico with potential for improvement given its big frame and concentrated fruit. It didn't really go well with a delicious dish of fettucine bolognese. Maybe it would be better with some cheeses. I can appreciate that this is a well made wine, it just wasn't my style.

Best,
Marc
