Yes - the decision was strictly based on the sediment. There was quite a bit. It was larger particles/crystals which seemed to settle out fairly fast, so perhaps I could have gotten away without, but I did the decanting as gently as I could, pouring with the decanter at an angle to avoid splashing (like pouring a draft beer and minimizing head).
