I buy most of my wine from Carolina Wine Company (on the Internet at http://carolinawine.biz). They have a bargain Spanish red that is a great wine for beach, picnic, party or dinner. It's the 2003 Baroja Rincon Seleccion shown online at $9.99 (earlier available at $8.49 or less by the case--may have been an earlier vintage). The 2001 Baroja de Baroja Crianza is only $12.99.
You may already be familiar with some of the grocery store brands such as Cline, Bogle and Columbia Crest. They usually do a decent job. Have you tried Jacob's Creek red blends from Australia? Echelon Pinot Noir? (usually available for $12-$13)
By the way, I have a complaint with liquor laws in your town of Greenville, SC. Stayed there one weekend when the Carolina Panthers were playing in Clemson Stadium. After the game Sunday I go into an Italian restaurant in Greenville and request a glass of Chianti to go with my pasta dish and I'm told "We don't serve wine on Sunday" like I was clearly a sinner for even suggesting a glass of wine on Sunday. Haven't they heard of the miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding?
