Metrat 2001 Chiroubles (Beaujolais) – Bretty. Feels bubbly, though it doesn't look it. There's a nice, light, pretty gamay with some lithe structure underneath, but really this is just too unkempt to recommend. Clean out your cellar, boys. (Girls?)

Ivo Skaramuča 2000 Dingač Plavac Mali (Piljavičino Pelješac Peninsula, Dalmatian Coast, Croatia) – A kind gift from Hoke Harden. And with a little concentration, it really does show varietal character (“slightly aged zinfandel,” Theresa guesses, blind). Boysenberry, fairly high acidity, some rough but moderately light tannin, a bit of that grape soda with an espresso shot than zin can sometimes get when it ages. It’s somewhat watery in the midpalate, though the exterior of the tasting experience is fairly pleasurable, and it’s a pretty decent effort from an area that isn’t exactly overcapitalized. A winery to watch.
